Notes: Grandmaster Jim Fung opened the first Wing Chun school in South Australia in 1973. Prior to that he had been teaching Wing Chun kung fu for a number of years at The University of South Australia and at Goodwood Boys High School. This makes him the longest teaching Wing Chun master in Australia. Because of the success of his academy many other people have opened schools modelled on it, however Grandmaster Fung’s was the first and is still the most successful. Grandmaster Fung is highly respected by the South Australian community and many prominent citizens such as Government ministers, politicians, doctors and lawyers etc, have trained at his school. Grandmaster Fung has trained the South Australian Police and many other Government organisations in self-defence. In 1986 he was elected by The Chinese Association of South Australia to the board of The Chinese Cultural Activities Committee. In 1988 to celebrate the South Australian Bi-centenary an exhibition featuring Grandmasters from all over the world was held in Adelaide. Grandmaster Fung was the only Australian master invited to represent all kung fu schools in Australia. Grandmaster Fung’s video, ‘Wing Chun’ is the only Australian product to receive a five star rating in America. His books ‘Wing Chun Kung Fu’ and ‘Wing Chun Weapons’ are both best sellers. ‘Wing Chun Kung Fu’ was actually chosen by the Hong Kong Ving Tsun Athletic Association as a training manual. He has featured extensively in various media publications throughout the world such as: Inside Kung Fu and Black Belt in the USA, Combat in England and Blitz in Australia. He has appeared on television many times in Australia and overseas. Grandmaster Fung’s International Wing Chun Academy was one of only a handful of schools in the world to be recognised in the All China Martial Arts Register (Nov 98, page 170). This is a great honour for his Academy and Australian martial arts. Perhaps the clearest indication of the respect that Grandmaster Fung commands in the world of martial arts is the fact that his International Wing Chun Academy is the only martial arts school in Australia to receive Government accreditation to offer tertiary qualifications in martial arts instruction. This means that full-time Australian students receive Austudy and overseas students are eligible to apply for part-time work and study visas while training in his school.
